Are you working today? OR Do you work today?

Main Post:

I was doing a test and there was a sentence

-Hey Anna, ______ today?(work) -No, it's Tuesday. I don't work on Tuesdays

The answer was "are you working?" but can we use present simple?

Top Comment: "Do you work today" sounds quite odd. "Do you work Tuesdays?" sounds normal. I think part of the problem is that "do you work?" initially sounds like it means "do you function?"

Which is more appropriate, 'Starting Today' or 'Starting from today'?

Main Post: Which is more appropriate, 'Starting Today' or 'Starting from today'?

Top Comment: This is quite difficult as I’m finding the difference hard to verbalise. I’m unsure how you intend to use it but both are correct in a variety of situations. I would usually use ‘starting from today’ perhaps more as an ultimatum eg ‘I won’t eat cheese, starting from today’ or maybe a command eg ‘you can’t do this, starting from today’. ‘Starting from today’ is a little more pointed and implies a new thing that will be ongoing. Whereas ‘starting today’ I would use more for general conversation about events and in informing the listener. Note that they can be used with other time frames eg ‘starting next week’ and ‘starting from next week’ etc and here I would assume the latter is something that will be a more long term event or procedure. I think they are quite similar though and can be used interchangeably or with slight changes to word order to get a different emphasis.
